What is magic? And why, for thousand of years, human beings sought for it? Is it real? Does it exist, or is it just a discipline made of tricks and illusions? And, if it really exists, where can we find it?
Our life is full of distractions. Some of theme are present in it every they, and we don’t realize what they really are. We leave our lives, we grow, we get older, we work, we rest, we hate, we love. All of this is nothing but a big distraction, the creation of the illusion of a purpose. A little game we play every moment, consciously and unconsciously, to avoid confronting ourselves with the Great Question: who are we?
Routines and codes, faiths and philosophies, are the instruments that we use to avoid the question, to hide from the thing we fear most: our inner darkness. To elude the “problem of the self”. Still, from time to time, a little light comes to us. It’s an intuition, an instant in which we can briefly have a look beyond our vast, fundamental solitude. A moment in which we dissipate the fog and see a path: the path to self-knowledge, to the recognition of the Being within ourselves. Some people just ignore that vision; others try to explain it with dogmas or relying on some form of authority; others, finally, create entire structure of thought to give it an explanation.
But there are some people who don’t. They hold the ground, knowing that something special has occurred in their life. They don’t turn back to the little light, but follow it. And by doing so, they start to know the mystery that they are. It is a higher knowledge, made of tasks and realizations, that brings them to change their consciousness (the way they see the reality that surrounds them and their relationship with it) and to reach a progressive awakening. These people are called wizards. The combination of acts and realizations that they perform is called magic.
Magic is the main tool that the wizards use in their path of self-knowledge and self-realization. We are talking here of the so called “high magic”: a higher form of knowledge expressed in the traditions of every culture as allegorical writings, mysteries, initiations; in the Oriental Culture, as theurgy, yoga and oriental mysticism; or, in the Occidental culture, as the secret knowledge of underground currents that were present in different times in the course of Western history, up to the Hermeticists and the Rosicrucians.
Through magic, things stop to be what there are to become what we want them to be. Through magic, we acquire wisdom and power at the same time. Through magic, we focus on the deepest energies of our human interiority and we are able to break our chains, overcome our human limitations and truly free ourselves.
“I entered the compartment for wizards,” said Pipi. “And I met a real wizard! He told me a lot of things about magic.”
“Oh, you should be careful,” said Emrys. “Magic can be a powerful thing. It’s either really valuable or really dangerous.”
