How beautiful it would be? To use magic and create something out of nothing that helps us in doing whatever we want?
In Disney’s “Fantasia – Sorcerer’s Apprentice” there is a scene in which Mickey creates a “cleaning broom”: a broom that is animated, moves and can do the cleaning of the house. In the movie, Mickey commands the broom to carry buckets of water to fill a cauldron, while he sits on a chair, with his legs on the table, and fall asleep. When Mickey wakes up, he finds the cauldron is overflowing, the broom is not stopping its work and the whole room is filled with water.
Our little apprentice, without even knowing it, is giving us two basic principles of high magic:
Poor Mickey! He wanted a broom that cleans the house by itself, but at the end of the day, the house was overcleaned and full of water! And poor us if we don’t pay attention to what we want: everything is interconnected, and what we do sometimes has consequences.
In the real world, obviously, we cannot create a cleaning broom by using magic. Wizards know very well that real magic is effective only in certain situations, where specific conditions apply and, most important, is subjected by the laws of the Universe. And in our Universe, energy is neither created nor destroyed, merely transformed. This means that, simply, creating something from nothing is impossible.
Nonetheless, in a moment of inspiration, we can create something from the energy that we have inside us. We could have an enlightenment, and learn how to use magic to generate something that helps us in making our dreams come true. Walt Disney never had a cleaning broom, but thanks to the simple imagination of it, and the conversion of this idea in a segment of an animated movie, he made enough money to hire someone who could make the cleaning of his villa for him. He was, unconsciously, doing magic.
“You will use magic.” He nodded toward Balthasar. “This man is a powerful wizard. Those raiders should not be a problem.”
